The National Technical University of Athens and, consequently, the School of Chemical Engineering, aims at training Engineers who will meet the present and future needs of the Country, as well as at developing their capability for original research, in order to provide answers to the problems of development in an international framework. Therefore, the Department tries to enrich the courses it offers with the most updated knowledge in Chemical Engineering, and with state-of-the-art solutions to industrial problems. Social and environmental problems are dealt with as integral parts of the Engineering Curriculum, and the optimal solutions to technical problems are always presented and judged with reference to such considerations. Furthermore, the development of the students personality is actively pursued, in order to make them appreciate the problems of Greece and the World at large, and to become responsible citizens and scientists, advising State and Industry on subjects of their scientific and technical competence.

Based on the above general considerations, the School’s Curriculum Advisory Board set the following principles for the design of the Curriculum:

  1. Teaching hours per week less than 30 h.
  2. Number of courses per semester less than 7.
  3. Strong chemical engineering character of studies.
  4. Recognition of the labour market situation of the country.
  5. Mandatory practical training in Industry.
  6. Professional specializations.

The mandatory practical training of the students takes place in industries or research establishments for 5 weeks, at the beginning of the 9th Semester. The rest of the semester is devoted to two mandatory courses of each specialization, to an optional course, and to the diploma thesis, that continues into the 10th Semester.

The professional specializations are in the following scientific areas:

  1. Process Engineering
  2. Materials
  3. Industries of Organic Chemicals – Polymers
  4. Inorganic Processes
  5. Food – Biotechnology

with the 5 grouped courses beginning in the 7th Semester. There is a presentation of the contents of each course upon the beginning of the 6th Semester, meant to enable the students to choose the appropriate specialization.

To avoid difficulties associated with the labour market for the specialization areas not chosen by the student, there are mandatory 3 hour courses in the other specialisations, in the 6th semester.
