Laboratory Personnel
The Computer Center (CC) supports the educational and research activities of the School. Its shared facility, in particular — known as the Personal Computer Laboratory (PC-Lab) — serves, in order of priority, the following purposes:
Beyond these functions, the staff of the Computational Center also conduct research activities, participating in external projects or providing services to third parties on topics related to computer science or involving computing as a key tool — such as education/training and the solution of practical problems in science and, more broadly, in society. Thus, in addition to the direct education of students in the use of modern computing technologies, the CC also aims to link these technologies with production processes.
The central machines and main workstation areas cover approximately 300 m². The core equipment includes an open Ethernet network composed of UNIX and Windows servers, workstations, and a cluster for parallel processing. This network is part of the broader School network, which includes around 650 computers, and is supported by the CC in terms of file storage, naming services, email, and other Internet services. Additionally, the CC hosts and maintains the School’s and students’ websites on a dedicated server, also providing webmail services.
In dedicated areas of the CC, specialized equipment is installed for the production and demonstration of educational materials based on multimedia, such as video capture and editing devices, digital cameras, scanners, and sound production and processing systems.
The CC is powered by an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and a backup generator (Genset), while the main facilities and sensitive machines are air-conditioned by dedicated temperature and humidity control systems.
Since 2019, responsibility for the operation of the CC and the School’s network, as well as the direction of the PC-Lab, has been assigned to Professor Charalampos Sarimveis (Director), with Professor Athanasios Papathanasiou as Deputy Director. From 2009 to 2019, the Director was Professor Andreas Boudouvis, while until 2009 the Director and “founder” of the CC was Professor Giannis Palyvos.
In 2023, the large PC-Lab hall was named “Giannis Palyvos Hall” in honor and memory of the late Giannis Palyvos.
Responsibility for the operation of the parallel computing cluster lies with A. Spyropoulos, while network and multimedia support has been assigned to I. Tzigounakis.
