The Laboratory of Industrial and Energy Economics (LIEE) is an officially established Laboratory (Government Gazette 307/1994, Issue B) operating within the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). The educational work offered by LIEE focuses on shaping the modern Chemical Engineer as a professional capable of understanding the economic environment, as well as the constraints and challenges it poses to both the practice of the profession and industrial activity more broadly. At the postgraduate level, LIEE also offers a wide range of courses closely linked to its main research directions.

More specifically, research at LIEE has developed in the following areas:

  • Economic and Strategic Analysis of Industry, Innovation, and Technology
  • Energy and Environmental Economics and Policy
  • Operations Research and Decision-Making

In all these fields, LIEE conducts both basic and applied research, supported by projects funded by the European Union, governmental agencies, and private-sector sources. Over the years, in addition to its educational contribution, the Laboratory has developed a coherent strategy for establishing research collaborations that enhance its visibility and impact both within NTUA and across the Greek and European academic and research community.

LIEE’s continuous participation in numerous pan-European research networks and programs serves as an indicator of its progress. Particular emphasis has been placed on the analysis, documentation, and formulation of evidence-based public policies in the fields of industry, energy policy, technology, innovation, information and communication technologies, enterprise support and entrepreneurship, and the environment — at European, national, sectoral, and regional levels. In recent years, the growing international and national prioritization of these issues has simultaneously opened up new avenues for teaching and research.

Overall, during the past 25 years, LIEE has participated in ten major competitive European Union research programs — from the 4th Framework Programme to Horizon 2020 — in the field of socio-economic research related to innovation and technology.

As a result, LIEE/NTUA constitutes the Greek team with the highest level of participation in European programs in this specific research area. Its activities now extend into new domains, such as the techno-economic assessment of technology market deployment, the development of suitable business models, and the process of entrepreneurial discovery itself.
