Course Description
The aim of the course is twofold: to introduce students to technical terminology related to their field and to acquaint them with the conventions of academic writing in English as well as the management and organisation of sources. More specifically, the course focuses on:
- Familiarising students with technical terminology specific to their field.
- Analysing the linguistic features of academic writing.
- Examining the structure and language of journal articles and popular science/newspaper articles.
- Examining the features of other academic genres, such as abstracts and literature reviews.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Develop genre awareness in the academic setting.
- Understand the conventions and features of academic discourse.
- Extend their knowledge of the English language and, in particular, the skills of reading and understanding specialised texts and writing in a way that meets academic standards.
