Course Description
The aim of the course is to consolidate foundational concepts related to processes and systems encountered in the Chemical and Biochemical Industry. It contains the following topics: Definition of Chemical Engineering Science and overview of the career activities of a Chemical Engineer. Fundamental Concepts, Aims, Objectives and Applications of Chemical Engineering in the Chemical and Biochemical Industry. Introduction to Engineering Calculations. Units and dimensions, problem solving methods, chemical equations. Material (mass) Balances (partial, total, in nonreactive processes and reactive processes). Mass balance problem analysis methodology in single and multiple -unit processes, recycling, bypass and material disposal processes. Solids, Liquids, Vapor, Gases. Vapor pressure, saturation and humidity, mass balances including condensation and evaporation. Energy balances: Concepts and units, calculation of enthalpy changes without and with phase changes, general energy balance, heats of reactions etc. Combination of Mass and Energy Balances. Graphical methods for data analysis and data presentation – Approximation methods for data integration and correlation. Solving computing problems on a PC
