Materials Decay and Protection

5281Selection - Engineering Sector

Course Description

The aim of the course is to educate students so that they can study:

  • The tendency of a material (metal or porous material) to decay, in a certain environment (susceptibility), or a system to resist decay (durability)
  • The attenuation of its mechanical properties / resistance and the effects of wear on it
  • The most common forms of decay
  • The speed of the decay
  • The dependence of decay from environmental conditions
  • Modifying the properties of the material and the parameters of the environment
  • The study of the material-environment system to reduce the speed and tendency of decay
  • The protection of materials at the industrial plants and structures scale

Course content includes topics on corrosion and protection of metallic materials and systems and the physico-chemistry of decay, maintenance of porous materials.
