Course Description

This course is aiming at introducing the students to Green Chemistry and Green Engineering.The course includes topics on: Principles of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering. Metrics for measuring the green character of reactions and processes . Process optimization, modifications and product re-design. Alternative Raw Materials, Solvents and Catalysts in the Chemical Industry. The contribution of Green Chemistry to sustainable agriculture. Performance evaluation based on chemical structure, chemical reaction and chemical transformation. Examples and exercises on green raw materials, reactions, reagents, solvents, reaction conditions and chemicals. Case studies on green processes. Ionic liquids (ILs, ionic liquids) and deep eutectic solvents (DES, Deep Eutectic Solvents). Chemical reactions of increased energy efficiency. High Energy Techniques (microwave, ultrasound). New Trends in Green Chemistry and Engineering – Biomimetic and Multifunctional Systems.

Laboratory of Green Chemistry and Engineering: Synthesis of polymeric films from starch. Green organic synthesis: oxidation of cyclohecanol to cyclohexanol. Synthesis and characterization of deep eutectic solvents (DES). Extraction of spent coffee grounds using DES Synthesis of silver nanoparticles using tea extract as the reducing agent. Green organic synthesis using high energy techniques.
